Petition Reason

The people of Syria are not our enemies. Yet Australia has lacked the commitment to seek the truth about the war in Syria while Syrians have become impoverished. In response to the 21/08/2013 alleged sarin gas attack in Ghouta, Syria, America and Britain threatened military strikes against the Syrian Arab Republic. However, credible reports indicate it was most likely a false flag operation committed by the Al-Qaeda-affiliated Jabhat al-Nusra group and assisted by foreign intelligence agencies. On 7/04/2018, an alleged chemical weapons attack in Douma, Syria, did result in western military strikes. However, the testimony of whistleblowers from the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) points to that alleged attack being another false flag operation. Today, the West’s unilateral coercive sanctions on Syria are having a catastrophic impact on the lives of Syrians. A recent UN commissioned report states: maintaining these sanctions ‘may amount to a crime against humanity, against all Syrian people’. In this dire situation, America occupies, controls, and benefits from Syria’s resource-rich northeast region.

Petition Request

We therefore ask the House to call on the Australian government to suspend sanctions on Syria and for the House to set up a Parliamentary Friends of Syria group which would be tasked to support an open, thorough investigation into the alleged chemical weapons attacks; to reassess the autonomous sanctions imposed on Syria; and to evaluate if sanctions are crimes against the human rights of Syrians.
